Flying to Amsterdam from London, Heathrow International Airport.
Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands. Despite its huge population, I still couldn't feel that the city is crowd with people. Nevertheless, Amsterdam is ranked 12th globally on quality of living, according to Mercer survey.
In Dutch language, the meaning of Netherlands is "a low land that lying below sea". Literally, it says most of the land in the Netherlands are lower than sea level. Hence, you can see many canals in city - Amsterdam. The purpose for the canals are prevented the flows of the excessive water which come from rain, snow, river and sea.Therefore, people in the Netherlands are quite concerning for the current issues like greenhouse affects and global warming. Otherwise, the whole country would be sinking below the sea.
Do you see that, you can see a huge, straight flood barrier in the Google Map. Yes, they build it for preventing the water flooding in the low geographical areas.
The second that made me surprised is, the city is full with bicycles and trams(a kind of train running on the road.) In other words, Amsterdam is a city for cycling. And that's the reason why i need to hire a bicycle for roaming the whole city. Cycling in Amsterdam is quite safe and enjoyable, because many roads were designed for bicycle. If you never been here, you never know how amazed at here after you had discovered how their road and traffic light system worked.
During the day time, you can visit their historical buildings, enjoy their food with heavily influenced by beer cultures, shopping and so on. Indeed, in the Netherlands, you don't also miss the chance for visiting its windmill, even though you can see in Paris, France too. hehe..
Undoubtedly, the Netherlands is the world's openness among other countries. And, for that reason, they has been dubbed "the world's most legal country". For example, how their government/people treats equally well to the prostitute and homosexual without bias but justices. As well as other stuffs like legally selling drugs and gambling etc. Since they have those, suppose their criminal case is very high. However, their criminal case is very very low. The Netherlands is considered one of the best's place for living and most of the people are well educated and polite.
Inevitably, Amsterdam has somethings that you can't feel and see in other place like Malaysia, somewhat conservative country. However, the fact is, you can explore some in New York City, for instance visit sex museum, and strip bar etc. Besides, New York is only out of the 7 states in the US allows same-sex marriages. Besides, the most interesting experience you can try or do in Amsterdam is to sipping cannabis coffee.
Somethings you can experience in Amsterdam are canal's view, Heineken factory, night party, night wandering, hang-up friends in bar, taste kind of alcohol drinks, porn museum, porn shows, red light district, Amsterdam's beer - proudly product - Heineken. "Whenever you go, you always can see Heineken's sign in the City.
In conclusion, they have a very open culture. Their cultures are very different than Malaysia. Second, you are totally felt safety in midnight. Third, I realized Netherlander's can speak many languages, for example, they speak well in Dutch, German, and English. Fourth, its people are very friendly.
Fifth, Amsterdam has its uniqueness between United Kingdom and France. Besides Amsterdam is the coldest place among the two city. However, NYC is still colder than London, Paris and Amsterdam.
Recommend for whom? if you are open mind person, like to hang up with friends, party, like night life experiences, Amsterdam is suitable for you. Besides Amsterdam has many kind of nice beers to be drunk.
